CAREER ADVICE

LET US HELP YOU FIND YOUR DREAM JOB

RESEARCHING A COMPANY BEFORE INTERVIEW

Before going to your interview, ensure that you have prepared extensively by doing an adequate amount of research on the organization and the people that you are meeting with.

There are numerous sources and websites to get information from like GOOGLE, LINKEDIN, GLASSDOOR, PRESS RELEASES and most importantly the COMPANY WEBSITE. Please ensure that you also spend time talking to your recruiter to better understand the company culture, their expectations and the role that you are applying for.

Do not let the Job description be your sole source of direction. The Job description is sometimes written by one stakeholder thus may omit an important requirement. The job description is a base for you to work of thus its best to enquire at interview stage if there are any additional requirements further to the job spec.

Companies are normally very impressed when candidates go the extra mile in their research and due diligence. If you are applying for a sales role or technical role, it will hold you in good stead to get information on the company’s products/ services and find out how they have been performing over the last five years. This level of detail can be found on the Internet or by even calling the company or a reseller of theirs and requesting further information.

NETWORKING AND SOCIAL MEDIA

According to a survey produced by LinkedIn, across 19 countries in 2013, NETWORKING to find a job, and PARTNERING with a recruitment company, featured in the TOP 3.

Social Media has now taken the business world by storm and as such, candidates need to be aware and adapt to the ever-changing world of recruitment.

Build a solid relationship with your recruiter; the relationship must be one of trust if you are to work well together. Social media has previously been a tool to stay in touch with friends and relatives, use SOCIAL MEDIA to stay in touch with companies that you admire, work colleagues, clients, previous staff members and grow your contact base.

CAREER PROGRESSION

The race to a promotion is not n easy one. It will be challenging, sometimes even demotivating but inevitably rewarding if you reach your goal.

Whilst the dynamics of corporate organizations differ, the basics to standing out and being noticed remain the same.

One of the key factors in getting a promotion is to be an exemplary employee who is highly respected at the company. Your experience, skills, reputation, work ethic, and success are all factors that will help you secure a promotion.

Key aspects in getting to the next level in your career:

  • WORK FOR A COMPANY THAT REWARDS AND RECOGNISES HIGH PERFORMERS
  • BE EXCELLENT AT WHAT YOU DO AND DO NOT SETTLE FOR MEDIOCRITY
  • BE RELAIBLE AND ON TIME- TREAT YOUR JOB LIKE YOU OWN BUSINESS
  • LEAD-TAKE INITIATIVE AND RUN WITH IDEAS THAT WILL ADD VALUE
  • JOIN THE A TEAM- ALWAYS SURROUND YOURSELF WITH POSITIVE EMPLOYEES AND DO NOT BE INFLUENCED BY NEGATIVE EMPLOYEES OR OFFICE GOSSIP
  • BE A TEAM PLAYER- “A TRUE LEADER SERVES FIRST AND THEN LEADS”
  • BE PROACTIVE- LET YOUR BOSS KNOW YOU AMBITIOUS AND THAT YOU ARE READY FOR THE NEXT STEP
FIRST IMPRESSIONS LAST – WRITING A CV THAT STANDS OUT

You may be the best-qualified applicant for a role and meet all the requirements but if your cv does not stand out or convey that message, you will not get to interview stage.

There are numerous websites, online resources, and even companies that can assist you with writing a good CV.

There are some basics though that must be clear and stand out on your CV.

Personal particulars: Please ensure that you contact details are on your CV which includes your email address and your telephone numbers. This is the most basic of requirements but is sometimes left out.
Be honest: Do not try to manipulate the duration of each job that you have had or change the dates. If this is discovered, you will loose all your credibility and sometimes even loose the job opportunity and the relationship that you have formed with your agent. If you have not completed a qualification, make it clear at the very first engagement that you have not as this is a material factor in most cases.

Highlight you skills, job duties and functions as well as any extra responsibilities that you had that may not have been part of your job description. It’s always good to mention your hobbies or interest so that the interviewer can get to know you better.

ALWAYS: add your accomplishments and successes. Every company wants to hire A players and A players are never shy about their success, awards and achievements. This also applies to academic excellence and achievement.
